Mahogany Volute Scroll at the Base of a Victorian Staircase
This close-up detail shows the volute scroll newel and ornate cast iron balusters of a bespoke Victorian staircase restoration.
The rich dark mahogany handrail curls into a perfect volute at the base — one of the most technically demanding elements of traditional staircase joinery — while the individually crafted cast iron balusters feature intricate decorative detailing characteristic of high-specification Victorian interiors.
We completed this beautiful piece of work for Wicklow Projects Ltd.
Mahogany Volute Newel and Ornate Cast Iron Balusters
The volute, or scroll, at the base of the handrail is hand-shaped to achieve a perfectly smooth, continuous curve that transitions from the handrail into the newel cap without any visible joint or interruption. The ornate cast iron balusters are fitted with precision, maintaining even spacing and perfect vertical alignment throughout. The parquet herringbone floor beneath completes this beautifully restored traditional interior.
