Closed string staircases are normally constructed from solid timber enclosing all treads and risers, and can be built to a lower specification suitable for carpeting, or a higher specification using hardwood for a natural or clear finish. Closed risers give a more solid, traditional appearance; open risers allow light to pass through and create a more contemporary, airy feel.
